WHAT IS AN EDITORIAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?
“EDITORIAL” IS THE NEWEST AND HOTTEST WORD IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY. BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
YOU HEAR IT EVERYWHERE: BRIDAL BLOGS AND FORUMS; IN WEDDING WEBSITES AND FROM WEDDING PLANNERS.
The Merriam-webster website recently published an exceptional article about the word “editorial” and its changing meaning. It’s an exceptional article to read if you ever have a moment. You can access it by clicking here.
THE LITERAL MEANING OF THE WORD EDITORIAL MEANS “PUBLISHED”; ORIGINALLY, IT REFERRED TO NEWSPAPER EDITORIALS. TODAY, IT MIGHT REFER TO MAGAZINES.
The term editorial does not limit to one perspective, style, or approach. It can refer to anything, from avant garde images that are polished, photoshopped, and curated, to candid, documentary style film images with natural lighting and very little photographic direction at all.
IT MAY INCLUDE DIGITAL OR FILM, WARMER OR COOLER TONES, BUT THERE IS ONE THING THAT ALL EDITORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY HAS IN COMMON: ARTISTRY.
Every one of the photographers listed above has a different approach to photography and her own personal style— a unique approach to color theory, composition, and direction. Every one is intentional and artistic, truly creative.
As an editorial wedding photographer, I pull inspiration from all genres. My work is often candid and documentary- style, but it is also at times directed, sometimes even posed. It is often on digital, sometimes film. It is usually minimally edited, but it is always intentional: every moment captured, and every edit unique.
IT IS ART. IT IS EDITORIAL.
